A tour of south eastern AZ. today…

We were up and at it, eager to be Tourists again this morning!  The sun was up, sky was clear, and the Jeep was ready to roll… we packed our lunch, and rolled out of the Park by 10:00 this morning… (pretty early ehh!)

South we headed on Highway 80, and soon crossed over the State Line again into Az.  The first stop on our tour was the Border Town of Douglas.  This is a smaller, western Town that sits right on the U.S. / Mexican Border.

When you get to the bottom of the Main Street, you better do as the sign says, and STOP, as in the background behind the sign, is the fence that blocks Mexicans from entering U.S.A.  Although, I cannot remember seeing so many Border Patrol Agents and Vehicles in a Town before in my life, so my assumption is the odd Mexican is probably making it over that fence some how!

We soon headed off towards the Town of Bisbee.  This is a quaint Town in AZ. and was built on the mining business.  That would be copper mining of course, as you can almost see the copper in the ground as you approach the Town.  Yes, I know, look at that sky today… it was beautiful and hit into the mid 70’s F. for sure.

Just before you get to the Historic Area of Bisbee, we stopped to check out the biggest man made hole in the ground I have ever come across probably… The mining operations stopped in the mid 70’s, and now the Town survives off Tourism.  You can take underground tours of the mine also.

We enjoyed our lunch on the main street of Bisbee, and took the chance to enjoy the nice sunshine today walking the downtown area… below I am so excited to have a cell phone signal, I called my Mom in Orillia and talked to Her for quite a while… trying not to snicker too loud when she told me they had freezing rain today… and it was cold!  (I love you Mom!)

Bisbee is a great place to visit, and all should go!

100_2473

We had more ground to cover, so after enjoying Bisbee, we headed north on the 80, and found ourselves a tunnel to go through…  next target on our list:  Tombstone!

Below I think I am reaching for my 6 gun… you have to be careful in this Town…

100_2479

Check out these two shady guys below… I think they were casing out the Bank…

100_2480

We no sooner got into Town, and the Butterfield Express pulled into Town with the mail, that is what happens in 1880!

100_2481

This Cowboy was just a jawing at me, so I threw him $20.00 bucks and told him he better take us on a tour of Tombstone!  He did… he saw my 6 shooter and knew I meant business!

100_2482

This guy was helping us board the Stage Coach, and kept asking if he could have a date with my “Daughter”… (Judy said “no”… he wasn’t her type!)

100_2483

.We got the full tour of Tombstone and were amazed at all the stuff going on!  Had a blast.  The Saloon below was real neat, and called “Big Nose Kate's” as Kate always apparently had her nose in everyone’s business…

100_2484

OK, so we came across this sign below… what famous spot in Tombstone do you think they are talking about???  ( there is a clue in this sentence…)

100_2491

Your right, that would be  the “OK Corral” in Tombstone!   This is what a lot of people come to see.  Wyatt Earp was the only man to walk away unhurt from the OK Corral shootout!

This Town was dripping with history, and we enjoyed a couple hours here, before we headed north to Hwy. 10, and on the road back to Rusty’s RV Ranch.

Tomorrow is U.S. Thanksgiving, and we are going to celebrate!   A pot luck dinner is being held in our Park, and we will be there!  Did not make it home until 7:00 this evening, after enjoying dinner on the road at Pizza Hut in Wilcox, Az.

Happy Thanksgiving to all of our American friends and readers!   Enjoy the Holiday, and hang onto you wallet on Black Friday!

Till tomorrow…

  2. I think we took the exact same pics of Bisbee and Tombstone as you did! We visited a few years ago and were just awestruck by the size of that mine (hole in the ground) as well.

Tombstone is a neat place to visit and does reek of history.

    Thanks for the memories!

  4. I've heard some folks complain that Tombstone is just a tourist trap. Yeah, I guess it is but I enjoyed it anyway! We had a great time and their Doc Holliday (from the shoot-out reenactment) was every bit as good as Val Kilmer. Glad you enjoyed both towns.

  9. interesting.....I biked that route last winter the opposite way and stopped in Wilcox at the Pizza Hut just off hwy 10........the mines at Bisbee have been sold and the company who bought it are cleaning up the chemical contamination in the area and going through the tailings with modern equipment and extracting ore.
Envy the weather you are enjoying

  11. I spent a couple of weeks in Bisbee last Winter and loved it. Road the bike into Tombstone several times. I got such a laugh out of the 'cowboys' on the street and all the goings on.
