Hard day of labour...

Chris and Kristina asked me to come in and help Chris, as he wanted to fill an old door frame with cement blocks on the house. This home was built back in 1905, all of cement block at the time, and is still in good shape. They had changed the floorplan over the years, before the kids bought the home, and the door we had to fill was no longer used. It was filled in with wood at the time, and Chris wanted to change this to block to make it more secure.

Now, you think I would have taken a picture of the door before we ripped out the wood framing....but no. So we start by filling in the door frame.

Before we could do anything... we needed Gwenny's and Bear's approval to start. After their inspection was completed, they gave us the thumbs up to start!

First we had to lay in some quick dry cement to make a proper footing for the new block... that took a bit, but as you can see by all the sunshine, it was nice to be outside working.

Chris got to the point where the first block was laid...about 20 more to go or so...

Each row required 2 1/2 blocks, so someone had to cut blocks in half... that would be me...

WARNING: This is one loud and annoying video sound wise... this has to be one of the dirtiest jobs out there... nothing worse than cement dust. We used an angle grinder with masonary blade to cut the blocks, and a big chisel to separate them. Worked out good.

We worked at it most of the day, and by 4:00 this afternoon, we were just over the half way point... it is coming good, and Chris was going to carry on laying a few more blocks tonight, after I left. This job should be finished up tomorrow...

Till tomorrow...

  1. What would we do without the kids to find ways to keep us out of trouble.

  2. True! Cutting stone and brick is a dusty, dirty and noisy job. It's looking good though!

    What a nasty job...I don't envy you.
